The
Wichí people live in the dry forest region,
known as the Chaco, which borders northern Argentina,
Bolivia and Paraguay. For thousands of years,
they have lived from the products of the forest,
and by fishing and growing vegetables. But their
way of life is increasingly under threat from
agribusinesses who illegally plunder their forests;
selling the timber and planting cash crops that
ruin the land. This process destroys the fragile
ecosystem and prevents the indigenous people from
using the land again. Wichí land rights
are protected both in Argentina's national and
provincial laws, but these are routinely violated.
There
is hope, however. the Wichí and other Indian
groups of the Itiyuro basin have formed a project
called Zlaqatayhi (or 'Our Forest') to protect
their ancestral homes. Now more than ever we need
to support indigenous peoples initiatives and
back their struggle for justice. |
